Our first months in the camper
What we underestimated when we had just left, and what we did differently after that.
The first weeks weren’t what we’d pictured. We had imagined arriving, unpacking and enjoying the view. Instead we were mostly busy with water, power, and the question of where we’d park that night.
[Add a concrete example from your first weeks here.]
What we underestimated
Space. Not the square metres, but the space in your head. When everything you own is within two metres of you, you notice immediately when something is lying around. We threw more away in that first month than in the whole year before.
And time. We thought we’d have oceans of time. But shopping for food in an unfamiliar place takes an hour. Fetching water takes an hour. Finding a spot sometimes takes half a day.
What we did differently after that
We started moving slower. Not packing up every two days, but staying a week in one place. It made such a difference that we wondered why we hadn’t done it from the start.
[Add here: which place was the first where you stayed longer, and what changed?]
Chloé noticed the difference too. Children need repetition, and you don’t get that when the surroundings change every day.
